EEBE Exchange to the Netherlands 2013

EEBE__Groningen_2013_3.jpg
Our exchange in Groningen has been very eventful so far! Eurosonic took place this past weekend and we all managed to make it to the free concert in the city centre at least once. The group of students at Hanze University that Micah and I have joined is great and they are very excited to show us around Groningen. We have also all had the pleasure of trying the delicacies of the snack wall, which was an experience in itself. So far, it’s been a great learning experience and I look forward to finding out what the next two weeks have in store.

EEBE Exchange to the Netherlands 2013

EEBE__Groningen_1.jpg
Four NSCC students and I left Halifax almost two weeks ago and since then it has been one new experience after the other. The most rewarding has been getting to know the four other NSCC students that I am traveling with. Let’s just say I have laughed a lot in the last two weeks. Our shared experiences have led us to be great friends that I know that I will have for a long time.

My favorite activity since being in the Netherlands is biking. This weekend we went on a bike trip to the farmland area outside Groningen with the goal of finding some old windmills. We were very successful and even met an engineer fixing a windmill built in 1904. He was kind enough to let us inside and look around. Afterwards we were also shown inside the nearby hydro plant. On the way home we came across an old traditional Dutch restaurant and had some typical Dutch soup to warm us up. Our day finished with us watching the bridge we had just crossed swing open for passing boats. We had a perfect Dutch day filled with windmills, waterworks and traditional food.

EEBE Exchange to Holland College (P.E.I.) 2012

My name is Colin and I am taking Mechanical Engineering Technology at NSCC and taking part in the EEBE exchange program has been a great experience. I have learned a lot in the last couple of weeks, about construction methods and passive houses. Before coming on the exchange I had very little knowledge about the processes that went into designing a house. I also learned how my knowledge in mechanical engineering fit into the designing process. I have met a lot of great people from Ireland, the Netherlands and PEI. Tomorrow morning we are going on a tour of a Government building that is LEED certified in Charlottetown. This exchange has been a great experience and I highly recommend taking part if given the opportunity. I have made friends in Ireland and the Netherlands that I know that I could rely on and contact about industry contacts and collaborate with.

EEBE Exchange to Holland College (P.E.I.) 2012

The last two weeks have been very busy and lots of fun! The first week was full of group activities and was a good introduction to others on the exchange. The exchange so far has been a great educational and social experience. I have learned invaluable skills that will contribute towards my portfolio such as training for the Hot2000 program, knowledge of international building practices, and experience working in a group with international students. It was a good window into how the skills that I have been learning over the last year at school will be applied once I get out into the field. I have discovered where my strengths and weaknesses lie in my knowledge base. I plan to go home and try and fill those gaps. Meeting a new group of people and living in a different place, even if it is in the same country has allowed me to develop my communication skills and personal skills. I have made friends that I know I can rely on and that I will hopefully collaborate with in the future.

Energy Efficiency Exchange on the Island!

EEBE Exchange to Holland College (P.E.I.) 2012

DSC_4777.jpg
The fourth exchange of the Canada/EU Energy Efficiency in the Built Environment project is currently underway at partner institution, Holland College in Prince Edward Island. Five students and two faculty from the Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen in the Netherlands and 3 students and 1 faculty from the Institute of Technology Carlow in Ireland joined Canadian students and faculty (from Holland College and NSCC) on this three-week exchange program focusing on a project finding energy efficient solutions in the built environment. Using a project-based learning approach, the students work in teams on a project designed by the host institution. At Holland College the students are working on an assignment with the goal of evaluating existing homes constructed by Habitat for Humanity and to making recommendations to improve these designs using Passivhaus standards and the principles of Adaptable Housing.
Besides spending a lot of time working together in their groups on this projects, students attended a two-day Sustainable Design conference and were treated to various excursions around the Island to take in the sights and experience some true P.E.I. culture.
NSCC students Chelsea Code-McNeil and Colin Brown are taking part in this exchange and will share their experiences as well, so stay tuned!
