The fourth exchange of the Canada/EU Energy Efficiency in the Built Environment project is currently underway at partner institution, Holland College in Prince Edward Island. Five students and two faculty from the Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen in the Netherlands and 3 students and 1 faculty from the Institute of Technology Carlow in Ireland joined Canadian students and faculty (from Holland College and NSCC) on this three-week exchange program focusing on a project finding energy efficient solutions in the built environment. Using a project-based learning approach, the students work in teams on a project designed by the host institution. At Holland College the students are working on an assignment with the goal of evaluating existing homes constructed by Habitat for Humanity and to making recommendations to improve these designs using Passivhaus standards and the principles of Adaptable Housing.
Besides spending a lot of time working together in their groups on this projects, students attended a two-day Sustainable Design conference and were treated to various excursions around the Island to take in the sights and experience some true P.E.I. culture.
NSCC students Chelsea Code-McNeil and Colin Brown are taking part in this exchange and will share their experiences as well, so stay tuned!
