International Tourism Study Tour of Belize
09.05.2012 - 24.05.2012
This blog entry really needs to start with last night because a few of us had the opportunity to sleep out on the beach on Hunting Caye under the palm trees and a perfect starry sky. The view was absolutely incredible. It was a once in a lifetime experience that none of us will ever forget. We got to watch the sun rise over the ocean. And the best part of the morning....it was finally sunny after days of on and off again rain! We had breakfast at what serves as the island's bar. As usual it was beans, eggs, bacon, and fry jacks. After breakfast we hit the high seas (literally) to head back to Punta Gorda. The ride started out not too bad but it was a little rough. Because of this we weren't able to go snorkeling again. On the way back we stopped in at the ranger station on Avalon Caye where we learned all about the work the rangers do to protect Belize's fisheries and marine wildlife. While there we had the opportunity to go up to the watch tower and see the cayes all layed out below us. The island is also home to some very friendly dogs named Scoby and Mohawk. We stayed there for an hour then we took off again. The rest of the ride back was certainly interesting. Another monsoon hit and we were soaked through by the time we climbed up onto the wharf in Punta Gorda. I'm sure going to miss all these boat rides.
Once we were all safely ashore and dry again we went to a delicious lunch at Seaside Heights. Afterwards we went on a tour of a local art gallery. Art isn't really my thing but I did enjoy looking at all the beautiful paintings and sculptures. Most of the afternoon was free time so everybody dispersed. Supper was at Walucas restaurant and it was amazing!
Overall it was an exciting day and I can't wait for the cacao festival to start tomorrow!
